What Is The Mary Washington House?
The Mary Washington House is filled with a rich history. This house sits on the corner of Charles and Lewis Streets and is known for its white frame. It was purchased in 1772 by former President George Washington from Michael Robinson for Washington’s mother, Mary Ball Washington. The house sat within walking distance of Kenmore, which was home to Mary Washington’s daughter Betty Washington Lewis. Mary Washington lived in this house for seventeen years until she died of breast cancer in 1789.
The Mary Washington House was also said to be where General Lafayette visited Mary Washington during the Revolution when she was working in her garden. It is also said that before his inauguration in 1789, President George Washington visited his mother at this house to receive her blessing.
The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, later named Preservation Virginia, purchased the house in 1890, which ultimately saved it from demolition. Before its purchase, it was to be disassembled, transported to the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, and reassembled for display. The Mary Washington House was restored and opened to the public in 1931.
The Mary Washington House displays 18th-century furniture and Mary Washington’s possessions. The house itself houses Mary’s bedroom and parlor room on the first floor and contains two bedrooms on the second floor, along with a small room that is dedicated to the history of its preservation. You can also tour the gardens at the Mary Washington House and stop by the Mary Washington gift shop.
