Catch A Nationals Baseball Game

Warm summer nights are perfect for hot dogs and fireworks. You can enjoy both of these at another summer pastime – a baseball game. The classic American game is a full experience. For residents of Fredericksburg, there is only one team to watch during the summer season. That team is the Fredericksburg Nationals baseball team.

Who Are the Fredericksburg Nationals?

As a Minor League Baseball team, the Fredericksburg Nationals are Single-A affiliate team of the Washington Nationals. The Nationals, or FredNats as Nationals’ fans endearingly call them, were founded in 2020 and have been a a part of the Carolina League since 2022. Though the current team is still in its formative years, the Nationals have a long and evolving heritage. The team was formerly known as the Potomac Nationals from 1984 to 2019, until the team relocated to Fredericksburg. Prior to that, the team was called the Alexandria Dukes. Throughout its changing history, the team has won championships in 1982, 1989, 2008, 2010 and 2014. Since March of 2022, Virginia Credit Union Stadium has been home to the FredNats.

Meet George, Mary, & Gus

Being so close to the nation’s capital, it is not surprising that the Fredericksburg Nationals would want to honor a Founding Father and the first president of the United States of America. At games and other community events around Fredericksburg, you can see George. Of course, you will often find Mary by George’s side. While George and Mary appeal to the older fans, the kids and the young at heart will love the team’s third mascot, Gus. You may not know exactly what Gus is, but when you see him, he’s hard to miss. This purple, fuzzy creature loves a good hot dog and the perfect Americana song playing at the exact moment a player steps up to bat like every other loyal fan.

Theme Nights

Every night watching the Nationals play is exciting, but there are some nights that are more thrilling than others with the theme nights and other promotional events. Every Friday home game, you can expect a dazzling firework display at the end of the baseball game. Saturday home games are always committed to a particular fun theme. The first weekend in July will be focused on Independence Day. Other themes include Space Jam, Christmas in July, and Superman Night. Be sure to stick around after the game to enjoy live music. Other promotional nights you will want to attend are Taco Tuesdays, Bark in the Park where your fur baby can attend, and games where the Fredericksburg Nationals turn into Fundadores de Fredericksburg as a part of the Copa de la Diversión.
