Don’t Miss Picnic In The Park

It’s that time of year again. Fredericksburg’s free Picnic in the Park is back. After kicking it off on May 2 with Harry Potter Day, there are plenty of themed picnic lunches coming up between now and the end of June. Each one includes music, food and more. With the exception of Beach Day at Riverfront Park on June 27, each Picnic at the Park is held at Memorial (Kenmore) Park. The next one up is Bring Your Pet Day scheduled for May 9 with music by Glen Shelton.

History Of Picnic In The Park

Do you know how long people in Fredericksburg have been coming out for Picnic in the Park? It has been more than 25 years since the first one was held in 1997. Since then, a tradition has been built that brings together community groups, business people, friends, families, seniors, and others in the Fredericksburg, Virginia, area. Mostly held in downtown’s Memorial (Kenmore) Park, the event offers music, food, and fun. Bring your own refreshments or check out what is available at one of the food vendors in the park.

May Themes

After Harry Potter Day and Bring Your Pet Day, the theme on May 16 will be Around the World Day. Head out to the park and listen to the sounds of Acoustic Onion while you experience different activities from around the world. A week later, on May 23, don’t miss Superhero Day, where you can dress up as your favorite superhero and enjoy music by Karen Jonas.

June Themes

Picnic in the Park will kick off June with Carnival Day on June 6. Kids and adults of all ages can enjoy carnival games while musician Harry Wilson keeps everyone entertained. June 13 will bring On the Farm Day, a day for you to explore the event tractors owned by Parks and Recreation. Peter Mealy and Laurie Rose Griffith will be performing. Finally, on June 20, you can come out for Shark Day and listen to Johnny D and the Lowriders. On June 27, when Picnic in the Park moves over to the Riverfront Park to close out the year, you are invited to play in sprinklers and enjoy the sounds of Bill Carroll.

Independence Day

By the time Picnic in the Park wraps up it will be time to celebrate our nation’s independence, and there’s no harm in starting to think about where you will watch the fireworks. Activities are scheduled all day and into the evening. Check with Parks and Recreation for details.
