Updates for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E300

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E300 is part of the completely redesigned E-Class, meaning you get a long list of changes for the current model year. It is important to note that the previous generation of the E-Class didn't have an E300 model; the comparable one from that year would be the E350. This 2016 E350 had a V6 engine with 302 horsepower while the 2017 E300 has a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower but much better fuel economy. While the E350 got 20 city/29 highway mpg*, the E300 has 22/30 mpg*, even with the stricter rating methods from the EPA for 2017 models.

If you put the 2017 E300 next to a 2016 E-Class sedan, you will notice some differences in overall design. The 2016 models were blockier while the 2017 E300 has gotten curvier and more closely resembles other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Those interested in dimensions will see that the 2017 E300 is 1.7 inches longer and has 2.6 inches extra in the wheelbase, which translates to more rear legroom. The exterior styling changes continue inside, where you will find a sweeping wood trim. While the 2016 E-Class had plenty of tech and large displays, COMAND has been updated in the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E300, including a 12.3-inch screen and an optional second screen to create a widescreen display. The 64 colors of interior ambient lighting are also new, as are newly standard features like PRE-SAE Sound, Crosswind Assist, and Active Brake Assist. You can also now opt for PRE-SAFE Impulse Side and Evasive Steering Assist.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class History: Looking Beyond the E300

Since the 2017 E300 is actually the first time this particular model has appeared, you need to look at the history of the E-Class as a whole to understand where it is coming from. The E-Class name didn't actually arrive until 1986, but it was based heavily off the 1953 Ponton, followed by the 1961 Fintail, 1968 Stroke-8, and 1977 Wedge. By 1998, the E-Class got BabySmart airbags, a passenger side airbag, Brake Assist, and a more efficient V6. More airbags arrived the following year, and there were stylistic revisions for 2000, along with updates to the COMAND system. The AMG was added in 2001 with a V8. Quad-zone climate control was available for 2003. In 2005, there was an updated suspension and steering plus a 3.5-liter V6. 2007 saw updates to the exterior styling, and audio was enhanced in 2009.
